The Vermilion Story

Over 25 years ago, Ann Brandow discovered a small family run needlepoint rug business on the coast of Northern Brazil. Talented Brazilian artisans were hand stitching beautiful needlepoint rugs of 100% virgin wool. All Vermilion rugs are custom ordered and handmade in any size and color combination.

In 2025, Vermilion Rugs starts a new chapter under Wells Textiles, and they continue to provide beautiful, hand stitched rugs from the same Brazilian makers.

How Designers are Using Vermilion Rugs

Test Results

Class I Fire Rated

The test result is an average critical radiant flux (watts/square cm) which indicates the level of radiant heat energy required to sustain flame propagation in the flooring system once it has been ignited. A minimum of three test specimens are tested and the results are averaged. Theoretically, if a room fire does not impose a radiant flux that exceeds this critical level on a corridor floor covering system, flame spread will not occur.

The NFPA Life Safety Code 101 specifies as Class 1 Critical Radiant Flux of .45 watts/sq cm or higher and Class 2 Critical Radiant Flux as .22 – .44 watts/sq cm.

Vermilion Rugs scored over 100% higher than the minimum Class I rating. Our products had an average Radiant Flux of 0.91 Watts/Square cm.

Hospitality projects require use of Class I products. Vermilion Rugs exceeds that rating, meaning you can specify our rugs and runners confidently for your next hospitality project.

Fire Resistant

We performed an additional test to certify that our products are Fire Resistant.

Known as ASTM D2859, this test is measures the response of finished textile floor covering materials when exposed to an ignition source.

A flammable tablet is placed in the center of a sample and lit. When the tablet burns out, the uncharred area of the sample must be greater than one inch. Seven of the eight samples tested must respond this way in order to meet the certification standard.

Our rugs averaged over 3.5 inches of uncharred area on all samples.

Tested for Wear on Stairs

In the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D119 test for creating surface appearance changes in Stair Tread and Noses from Foot Traffic, our rugs were given a 4.5 out of 5.0 Grade after 20,000 passes.

This roughly simulates what the carpet would look like if a family of 4 used the stairs 4 times a day, every day for 5 years.

Mechanical Wear Response

We had the Hexapod Test performed on our Rugs. This test captures the change in color and appearance when subjected to repetitive mechanical force.

Our carpet was rated at 4.5 out of 5.0 on appearance and color change. This rating means there was little or no visible wear once the test concluded.

We performed an additional test to check for pile distortion. That result was also a 4.5 out of 5.0.

Our rugs can be confidently specified for Boutique Hotel Rooms, all Residential Applications and as Stair Runners.

Cleaning & Care
